Cherepanov was playing for the Avangard Omsk in a Kontinental Hockey League game outside of Moscow when this tragedy happened.

He was 19.

Some claim that he had chronic ischemia — a medical condition when not enough blood gets to the heart or other organs and probably should not have been allowed to play in a game. His agent vehemently disagrees citing that the numerous tests done during the NHL draft and team workouts made it impossible to miss such an illness.

And while the cause of his death is uncertain, one thing is for sure – the KHL reeks of ineptitude and negligence.

There was no ambulance on duty at the arena where Omsk was playing and that the medical staff there did not even have a working defibrillator on hand.

These things should never have happened. Medical staff and ambulances were lined up and available in my cousin’s soccer game. And this was among children ages 8 to 12. What more for a professional hockey match where in vicious body checks, sticking and hacking are a common occurrence?

Hockey is a contact sport and as is, the safety of the athletes should always be the first priority. What was the league official thinking in not having the proper medical staff and equipment in place?

The KHL must answer these questions and should never let this happen again. May the death of Cherepanov be the catalyst that never lets this thing to happen again.

The regular season is over and MLB postseason is on the way. Here are some of story lines that I am eagerly watching to develop like cheap 4 color printing:

1. The Chicago Cubs ending their 100 year drought – what a great story would it be if the Cubs won the World Series this year. The fans deserve it and the team is very capable of winning it all especially with the 1 -2 punch of Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden.

2. Manny and Joe Torre getting their revenge – as much as I like seeing the Cubs win it all, this is the next best thing that could happen this October. Manny Ramirez and Joe Torre winning the World Series after their former teams released them – revenge is sweet.

3. CC Sabathia arm watch – just how much abuse can CC Sabathia’s arm take? Talk about being overworked.

4. Can Philadephia win it all? – flying under the radar this post season, Philadelphia is 1-0 leading its series with the Brewers. They are the dark horse in the NL with its high powered offense and bullpen anchored by closer Brad Lidge.

In the American League:

1. Can the Red Sox dominate? – talks of winning another championship abound but they need to get past the surging Angels.

2. Can the Angels get over the hump? – even though they had the best record in the league, they will be facing perennial nemesis Boston which beat them last year.

3. Can the Rays continue the miracle season? – on their first post season appearance, the Rays prove that they have the talent to compete. Winning the World Series will be the icing on the cake

4. It’s now or never for Thome and Griffey – probably the last time for both sluggers to get their World Series rings. They will be going all out.

Who do you think will make it… Choose your bet and keep an eye on it.

Personally I think that the best two are Big Ben and Jake Cutler. But giving in to the consensus picks, here are my opinions on why Big Ben is ahead of Tony Romo.

And to sum it up, Big Ben had a 13-0 season as a rookie in 2004. Not only that, Ben is also the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. He has a 5-2 record in the post season meanwhile; Romo has yet to win a playoff game.

With the Arizona Diamondbacks seemingly choking their way out of a playoff spot, I think this the right time to look at something that is somewhat positive – Randy Johnson and his quest for 300 wins.

Being stuck at 294 after a few games, fans have been blaming the Dbacks’ offense (or lack thereof) as well as its inconsistent bullpen in costing the Big Unit his shot at 300 wins this year. How will the defending super bowl champs fare with the loss of Jeremy Shockey, Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora? Not to mention, how will Eli Manning fare against Greg Blache’s blitz packages.

4. Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens

A classic matchup of offense versus defense. Who will win? The high flying offense of the Bengals or the lock down defense of the Ravens?

5. New England Patriots vs. Kansas City Chiefs

How serious is Tom Brady’s foot injury? Can the Pats repeat their undefeated run last year and can they put the spygate scandal behind them? KC will serve as a solid matchup for them in Week 1.

Ever since over powering Pete Sampras in the 2000 final, Safin’s career has since been a roller coaster ride. The mercurial Safin claimed the number one spot in the world only to lose it due to injuries, inconsistencies and lack of focus.

His career went on a downward spiral but when everyone was beginning to say that he was done, he outplayed Roger Federer in the 2005 Australian Open semifinal en route to his dominating performance over Lleyton Hewitt in the final.

Doubters need only to look at Bolt’s history to see that he is only running up to his full potential. At 15 years of age, he already made a mark by being the youngest world junior medalist ever – a trend that will continue leading up to his career as a professional in 2002.

However, his first year as a professional was mired with injuries that kept him form training and competing well. By his second year he slowly started his ascent from the top by placing along side champions Asafa Powell, Wallace Spearmon and Tyson Gay.

Nadia Comaneci was 14 when she scored the sport’s first perfect 10. It is still one of the most memorable moments in Olympic history and it changed how gymnasts are judged with in the following years.

Yet none of these moments would have been possible if we were playing in today’s rules.

Sixteen is the Olympic age limit imposed in 1997 and at the Beijing test event held last December, International Federation of Gymnastics president Bruno Grandi announced that he was looking into making the 16-year-old minimum age limit for all international competition after the Olympics.

With this, controversial yet highly successful gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi voices his opposition.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Karolyi said that the age limit is unfair an that it is nonsense. He added that whoever has the maturity and talent to compete at the Olympic level should not be deprived of their dreams.

I tend to agree.

Many under aged competitors are good enough to compete at an international level. Just look at American Nastia Liukin missed the Olympic cutoff date by two months. She dominated the US circuit yet due to her age was unqualified for the Olympics.

Also, if you look at the gymnasts that compete in the women’s events, you will notice that almost all the competitors do not look like 16 year olds. But do people care?

The fact that these girls are here competing, and competing well, proves they belong at an international event no matter their age.
