I was talking to a friend about the sample of brochure printing that I got from an online printing company last Monday when we heard that New York Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov collapsed on the bench seated beside hockey great Jaromir Jagr after a change in shift.

Cherepanov was playing for the Avangard Omsk in a Kontinental Hockey League game outside of Moscow when this tragedy happened.

He was 19.

Some claim that he had chronic ischemia — a medical condition when not enough blood gets to the heart or other organs and probably should not have been allowed to play in a game. His agent vehemently disagrees citing that the numerous tests done during the NHL draft and team workouts made it impossible to miss such an illness.

And while the cause of his death is uncertain, one thing is for sure – the KHL reeks of ineptitude and negligence.

There was no ambulance on duty at the arena where Omsk was playing and that the medical staff there did not even have a working defibrillator on hand.

These things should never have happened. Medical staff and ambulances were lined up and available in my cousin’s soccer game. And this was among children ages 8 to 12. What more for a professional hockey match where in vicious body checks, sticking and hacking are a common occurrence?

Hockey is a contact sport and as is, the safety of the athletes should always be the first priority. What was the league official thinking in not having the proper medical staff and equipment in place?

The KHL must answer these questions and should never let this happen again. May the death of Cherepanov be the catalyst that never lets this thing to happen again.

The regular season is over and MLB postseason is on the way. Here are some of story lines that I am eagerly watching to develop like cheap 4 color printing:

In the National League:

1. The Chicago Cubs ending their 100 year drought – what a great story would it be if the Cubs won the World Series this year. The fans deserve it and the team is very capable of winning it all especially with the 1 -2 punch of Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden.

2. Manny and Joe Torre getting their revenge – as much as I like seeing the Cubs win it all, this is the next best thing that could happen this October. Manny Ramirez and Joe Torre winning the World Series after their former teams released them – revenge is sweet.

3. CC Sabathia arm watch – just how much abuse can CC Sabathia’s arm take? Talk about being overworked.

4. Can Philadephia win it all? – flying under the radar this post season, Philadelphia is 1-0 leading its series with the Brewers. They are the dark horse in the NL with its high powered offense and bullpen anchored by closer Brad Lidge.

In the American League:

1. Can the Red Sox dominate? – talks of winning another championship abound but they need to get past the surging Angels.

2. Can the Angels get over the hump? – even though they had the best record in the league, they will be facing perennial nemesis Boston which beat them last year.

3. Can the Rays continue the miracle season? – on their first post season appearance, the Rays prove that they have the talent to compete. Winning the World Series will be the icing on the cake

4. It’s now or never for Thome and Griffey – probably the last time for both sluggers to get their World Series rings. They will be going all out.

Who do you think will make it… Choose your bet and keep an eye on it.

An article recently took into account several of the young QB’s in the NFL today. However, taking into account most forums, most people seem to think that the two most talented quarterbacks in the game today are Ben Roethlisberger and Tony Romo.

Personally I think that the best two are Big Ben and Jake Cutler. But giving in to the consensus picks, here are my opinions on why Big Ben is ahead of Tony Romo.

First of all let’s talk about color brochure prints and off field mistakes. Big Ben was involved in a motorcycle accident a couple of years ago and was visibly shaken during the season. Romo on the other hand, was involved with Jessica Simpson. So it’s pretty much even.

However, Ben did set Steelers records for most touchdown passes (32) and the highest passer-rating (104.1) last season. His passer rating was second only to Tom Brady who had a monstrous year last season. And on third downs, Big Ben had the third-best passer rating (107.8) third behind Garrard (128.8) and Brady (115.6).

Given that he was sacked 40 plus times last season, Big Ben’s passer rating when facing a blitz was 105.8 again second only to Tom Brady.

And for those who are saying that Big Ben is at best a game manager, take alook at this: Big Ben has a yards at the catch average of 7.7 yards trailing only Peyton Manning.

And to sum it up, Big Ben had a 13-0 season as a rookie in 2004. Not only that, Ben is also the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. He has a 5-2 record in the post season meanwhile; Romo has yet to win a playoff game.

In a spring training game, he showed the world what will happen when a 97 mph fast ball hits a swooping bird

The way he carried an anemic offense and giving his team a chance to win every time he stepped in the mound.

With the Arizona Diamondbacks seemingly choking their way out of a playoff spot, I think this the right time to look at something that is somewhat positive – Randy Johnson and his quest for 300 wins.

Being stuck at 294 after a few games, fans have been blaming the Dbacks’ offense (or lack thereof) as well as its inconsistent bullpen in costing the Big Unit his shot at 300 wins this year. However, looking back at history and other several postcards printing services, that’s the way that it has been ever since he put on the Arizona uniform.

Remember the 2004 season when he finished with a 16-14 record? His offense scored two or fewer runs in 17 of his 35 starts that season. And when they scored three or more runs, Johnson was 13–2. Imagine what his record would be if he pitched for a team with a better offense?

Stop staring at that brochure design and better free up your schedule for these five must not miss matchups in week one:

1. New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins

You can’t ask anything less in Brett Favre’s debut as a New York Jet. As far as story lines go, this sure is a must-see game. First of all, the game will give us a preview on how the Jet’s free agent acquisitions will pan out. Will Favre have that immediate connection with his talented wide outs? Will the O-line hold? And most the most intriguing of all, how will he fare against the QB he replaced, Chad Pennington?

2. Minnesota Vikings vs. Greenbay Packers

Never mind that these two teams hate each other, this matchup will serve as a preview of what Aaron Rodgers brings to the table as QB. It will also serve as a test for the Packer’s D-line when they go against the Viking’s massive O-line and the power running game of Adrian Peterson.

3. New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins

How will the defending super bowl champs fare with the loss of Jeremy Shockey, Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora? Not to mention, how will Eli Manning fare against Greg Blache’s blitz packages.

4. Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens

A classic matchup of offense versus defense. Who will win? The high flying offense of the Bengals or the lock down defense of the Ravens?

5. New England Patriots vs. Kansas City Chiefs

How serious is Tom Brady’s foot injury? Can the Pats repeat their undefeated run last year and can they put the spygate scandal behind them? KC will serve as a solid matchup for them in Week 1.

One of the more interesting things that I am keeping my eye on in this year’s US Open is the progress of Marat Safin.

Ever since over powering Pete Sampras in the 2000 final, Safin’s career has since been a roller coaster ride. The mercurial Safin claimed the number one spot in the world only to lose it due to injuries, inconsistencies and lack of focus.

His career went on a downward spiral but when everyone was beginning to say that he was done, he outplayed Roger Federer in the 2005 Australian Open semifinal en route to his dominating performance over Lleyton Hewitt in the final.

Safin undeniably has talent, he just can not seem to get the breaks. Add to that his temper and what you get is an enormously talented person capable of beating anybody and is just as capable of losing to anybody.

The unpredictability of Safin is what endeared him to many fans. You just don’t know which Safin would show up. Every tirade, every dent in his tennis racquet and every quote are like business cards that bears his name.

Remember Wimbledon? Everyone knew grass was his least favorite surface. Every one counted him out when he drew number 3 ranked Novak Djokovic. Marat even bought himself a ticket for a flight to Russia that was scheduled after the match.

What happened next?

He shocked the world. He shocked himself.

He went on to win the match, win a couple of more matches and reached the semifinals before bowing out to defending champion Roger Federer. It was the farthest he got in Wimbledon – not even once did he reach the Wimbledon semis during his run as the number one player in the world.

No one knows how long can Safin go in this year’s US Open. Not even Safin himself.

Usain Bolt dominated the 100 mete, 200 meter and the 4 x 100 meter relay winning three gold medals and breaking three world records in the process. Instead of standing in awe of a man that is the fastest man on earth, people hate on and accuse him of doping.

In an interview Bolt attributed his success to hard work, having fun and a fast track.

No doping.

Doubters need only to look at Bolt’s history to see that he is only running up to his full potential. At 15 years of age, he already made a mark by being the youngest world junior medalist ever – a trend that will continue leading up to his career as a professional in 2002.

However, his first year as a professional was mired with injuries that kept him form training and competing well. By his second year he slowly started his ascent from the top by placing along side champions Asafa Powell, Wallace Spearmon and Tyson Gay.

That set the stage for what was to be a dream finale for the sprint events at Beijing. However the much hyped up “competition” never materialized as Bolt blazed past everyone. He was like a digital printer out printing offset printers en route to his historic romp.

3 events.

3 golds.

These are some of the achievements of one Brett Favre. All of these he achieved in a Greenbay Packer uniform. He retired, unretired and then the unthinkable happened – he got traded.

You heard me right.

Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets.

Five months after he gave a tearful goodbye to a Hall of Fame career, Favre is now part of a Jets team which went 4-12 last season. A Jets team that has gone through 15 QB starters since Brett Favre started his consecutive starts streak that began on Sept. 27, 1992.

The Jets are hoping Favre can bring them some of the magic he created at Lambeau Field. They hope hat somehow this 38 year old future Hall of Famer can regain his gun slinging form from last year where he is coming off one of his most productive seasons.

He passed for 4,155 yards, his most since 1998, and had 28 TDs with 15 interceptions. He still has unbelievable arm strength that can stretch the field and open up the offense.

Throughout his career, Favre has the ability to improvise and make something out of nothing – he needs to do this with the Jets now in order to save this struggling franchise.

Nadia Comaneci was 14 when she scored the sport’s first perfect 10. It is still one of the most memorable moments in Olympic history and it changed how gymnasts are judged with in the following years.

Yet none of these moments would have been possible if we were playing in today’s rules.

Sixteen is the Olympic age limit imposed in 1997 and at the Beijing test event held last December, International Federation of Gymnastics president Bruno Grandi announced that he was looking into making the 16-year-old minimum age limit for all international competition after the Olympics.

With this, controversial yet highly successful gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi voices his opposition.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Karolyi said that the age limit is unfair an that it is nonsense. He added that whoever has the maturity and talent to compete at the Olympic level should not be deprived of their dreams.

I tend to agree.

Many under aged competitors are good enough to compete at an international level. Just look at American Nastia Liukin missed the Olympic cutoff date by two months. She dominated the US circuit yet due to her age was unqualified for the Olympics.

Also, if you look at the gymnasts that compete in the women’s events, you will notice that almost all the competitors do not look like 16 year olds. But do people care?

The fact that these girls are here competing, and competing well, proves they belong at an international event no matter their age.

Bostjan Nachbar, Juan Carlos Navarro, Carlos Delfino, Primoz Brezec, Tiago Splitter, Jorge Garbajosa and Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Vassilis Spanoulis, Arvydas Macijauskas and Sarunas Jasikevicius all have left the NBA to play in Europe for a more lucrative contract.

Josh Childress is the next to go to the tune of $21 million for three years playing for the Greek club Olympiakos. That’s $7 million every year – after taxes. It also helped that Childress spends his offseason in Europe, giving him an idea of how is there unlike most of his peers that only read about Europe through their brochure printing materials.

One must remember that the Euroleague teams do not have a salary cap or a luxury tax so that means that teams are allowed to spend as much cash that they want on a player. Also, keep in mind that the euro is much stronger than the dollar – this gives Europeans the advantage of offering more. The only question is whether or not there are owners that have the resources and are willing to shell out enough money for players to prefer them over the NBA.

During the past, Europe has been considered the last stop for NBA players that have declining careers as well as prospects that never quite made it to the next level. These players are the ones who did not make the NBA team’s rosters after training camp. It was a league of wash up and has beens. Today, the tide is turning. Even veteran players like Jason Kidd are mulling over the possibility of playing in Europe.

Globalization really goes both ways.
